We're so glad you decided to stop by John Wesley's
Internet front door! This site exists to serve our members, our friends, and
most importantly to make new friends. Whether you've recently arrived in
Charleston or are still planning a move, we want to extend a warm
"Welcome." It is our prayer that you find a new church home that
meets your spiritual, personal, and family needs. John Wesley might be that
home.
Please take the time to "surf" this site and learn some of what we are about. You will find our
"purpose" immediately below, and also on literature, newsletters,
and throughout John Wesley to remind us all of whose work it is we do. Also, scroll "on down" as you will find answers to
questions that have frequently been asked by visitors. Perhaps these answers
can respond to a question you might have.
The purpose of John Wesley United Methodist Church is to be a community for
spiritual growth, committed as disciples of Christ, to proclaim the Gospel and
to reach out to others with God's Love.
We extend to you a warm invitation to visit us any time. We are an active and
involved church as illustrated in our bi-weekly newsletter, "A
Work In Progress." A Newsletter and a Web Site tells
some of our story, but nothing can compare to a warm smile and a kind word
given personally. We hope we can meet you!
A New Visitor Might Ask
A "First-Time" Visitor might wonder if . . ?
It can be just a bit unsettling when you think about visiting a new church.
Many questions can cross your mind about what we do, where to go, and what to
say. You should be completely comfortable on your first visit, and by
eliminating the "unknowns" before hand, our prayer is that you will
come worship with us and experience God's love.
Should I visit just a worship service, or perhaps include Sunday School?
-
Everyone is welcome at Sunday School, as well as our Worship services. We have many Sunday Schools from
which to choose, and you can read about
them at this site. You're encouraged to visit several class
es,
to "shop around" first, so as to find the one that best
fits your needs and interests. Greeters are available in the halls
to give directions, but you could just as easily stop anyone you
see and receive a warm welcome and help finding your way. It is
completely up to you, but you would be most comfortable on
"day one" should you include Sunday School. Besides, you
can really get to know us better in a small group setting.
What about my children not yet in kindergarten or above?
- A nursery is available during Sunday School and during both services
for your convenience.
How would I find my way around?
-
First, you must find our church. We are on the Savannah Highway
about a mile south of the Ashley River bridge on the West side of
the highway. (See City
Map to John Wesley). Parking, convenient to all of our
facilities, is available on both sides and in the back of the
church.
-
During Worship, ushers are always available to guide you and answer
your questions. If you arrive late for Worship, it isn't a
problem. The ushers will help you find a seat at a convenient
time.
-
A map is available to
familiarize you with with our facilities if you like to strike
out on your own.
Are there customs in worship that might be strange to me?
We hope that nothing you experience at John Wesley will ever make you
uncomfortable, but the "unknown" can make anyone a little uneasy.
You might ask,
-
"Do they sing a lot?" We
sure do! Methodists love to sing.
-
"Do they recite memorized passages?"
Not really, but you might think so because many members are so
familiar with our regular service.
-
Everything that happens in the worship service is printed in the
Order of Worship that everyone receives as they enter. All page
numbers are given for any song or passage used during the service
so you can easily follow along. We want you to be comfortable, and
most importantly, we just want to meet you.
What if they serve communion?
