Gary Phillips
Senior Minister
Rev. Gary D. Philips is a native of Kentucky. He was raised in a
United Methodist Parsonage and has lived in one almost all his
life. Between his fathers congregations, his wife's congregations
and the ones he has served, he has had intimate contact with as
many as 25 different churches during his life. While in Seminary
he met the Rev. Patricia Parrish and in the midst of final exams,
Annual Conference and moving from Emory University to South
Carolina they married. In their first years of married life they
served jointly 5 separate churches.
Gary has served in inner city, rural and mill church environments.
He considers his ministry style to be that of "Jack of all trades"
and master of None. While he enjoys the art and life of worship,
he is as likely to be in the midst of life with every one from the
kids to the older adults. He finds pleasure in being a part of the
playful part of life and significance in being part of the
transitions of life.
It is his delight to serve God and God's holy kingdom and the
broader community of Charleston through his role as pastor of John
Wesley United Methodist Church.
